Trademark fun: Best US ski resort logos

Posted by ipelton on: February 28th, 2014

I was recently in Colorado. Some of the ski resort logos are terrific. So I have been thinking about the best US ski resort logos.

Here are my favorites below. Is there a great one I missed?  Let me know in the comments.

More than 10 “flappy” trademarks filed in February!

Posted by ipelton on: February 27th, 2014

As I often note, trademark applications mirror pop culture trends a lot of the time. When “Flappy Bird” created a stir last month, it led to the filing of at least 11 trademark applications for “FLAPPY” names at the USPTO.

Amazingly, it appears that all 11 applications are from 11 different owners.

Anatomy of a trademark portfolio: Vail Ski Resorts

Posted by ipelton on: February 26th, 2014

Vail Ski Resorts is a conglomerate of 20+ resorts around the world. And they have a great portfolio of names, logos, slogans and trademarks — including a nontraditional trademark for a jacket design.

In the last 2 weeks, no less than 6 different persons and entities have filed applications to register the FLAPPY BIRD name with the USPTO in connection with software. This comes after the game’s creator pulled it from the app stores claiming that he never imagined it would be so successful, and that it was too addictive.  See Wikipedia entry.

See below for the USPTO application details.

A new slogan: THE NONTRADITIONAL TRADEMARK LAWYERS

Posted by ipelton on: February 21st, 2014

Nontraditional trademarks are source indicating things that are not words or designs, such as sounds, colors, shapes, mascots, uniforms, packaging, and more.

Nontraditional lawyers are different from traditional law firms. They use technology to provide more efficient services – the internet for research, email for communication, networks for document storage, and online systems for filing. They charge flat fees where possible. They are smaller and nimble. They publish blogs, create apps, and use social media. They understand apps and social media. They build proprietary software for managing dockets and deadlines.

EMP&A is the opposite of a big, dark-paneled, austere law firm. We believe in treating our clients the way they would like to be treated, with personal, efficient and flat fee services.  Our goal is make every step of the process easier and more effective for clients – no matter what the case entails. We are leaders in providing trademark legal services, because of our:

• Person-to-person service

• Flat fees

• Insider experience at USPTO

• Use of technology

• Easy access to the USPTO

• Involvement in industry associations keeping us abreast of current issues

And we have a great deal of experience protecting ‘nontraditional’ trademarks, like the following (click for USPTO records):

Of course, I filed to register our new slogan, The nontraditional trademark lawyers, with the USPTO last month!
