Trademark applications filings through end of September:

Through the first three quarters of 2012, there were 234,888 trademark applications filed with the USPTO (according to a TESS search conducted at approximately 5:30 PM on 10/09/2012).

Through the first three quarters of 2011, there were 234,646 new trademark applications filed.

By way of comparison, through the first three quarters of 2010, there were 215, 459 new trademark applications filed.

And in the first three quarters of 2008, which was the height of filings before the recession began, there were 233,1189 applications filed.

The filings in 2012, through the end of September are on the rise…. but 0.1 percent!  But any increase is better than a decrease – since trademark applications are often considered a bellwether of the overall economy.

Will 2012 be a record breaking year for the number of new trademark applications filed? I predict it will be.

Trademark registrations issued by USPTO:

First three quarters of 2011: 134,580

First three quarters of 2012: 137,306
