Based on a search of the USPTO records, 301,786 trademark applications were filed in 2011*. That was an increase of 18,655 more than the 283,121 applications filed in 2010. The increase from 2010 to 2011 was 6.59%.

As you can see from the numbers below, 2011 was just 5,000 applications shy of the record for most applications in a year, set in 2007. If the trends over the last few quarters and years continues, 2012 is likely to set a record for the most trademark applications.

2006:  280,712 new applications

2007:  306,510 new applications

2008:  294,159 new applications

2009:  268,936 new applications

2010:  283,121 new applications

2011:  301,786 new applications

Inside the numbers from 2011*

2nd half of 2011: 150,394 new applications

Of the 301,786 new applications filed in 2011, nearly 10% [27,930] are already registered and 8,223 have already been abandoned

I’m not sure what my favorite trademark of 2011 was, but here are two strong contenders:

  • – the configuration of the entrance to the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, registered in 2011 with the USPTO. From NY Times Article: The entrance to the store, on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets, is a glass cube, 32 feet on each side, with a suspended Apple logo inside. Customers walk down a circular staircase — or take a cylindrical glass elevator — to the 10,000-square-foot store below. The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week — a first for Apple and an acknowledgment of New York’s status as a round-the-clock city.”
  •   – registered for “On-line retail store services featuring physical and virtual merchandise for use by members of an online community in connection with a designated website featuring fictional characters”
