The G8 (Group of Eight) met last week. It produced a declaration entitled “Renewed Commitment for Freedom and Democracy.” The declaration includes several references to intellectual property rights and the members pledged to take “effective action against violations of intellectual property rights in the digital arena, including action that addresses present and future infringements.”  T

The Declaration also notes “the importance of enforcement in order to incentivise innovation and protect innovation once developed,” and recognizes “the need to have national laws and frameworks for improved enforcement.”

As expected, the talk here is of enforcement and protecting (extending?) the rights of intellectual property owners (i.e. big business). Absent are any mentions of entrepreneurs, small businesses, or the dangers created by over-expansive enforcement of intellectual property.

See Paragraphs 15 and 29 of the Declaration below for more.
