Now that the year is just over half over, I was able to review the USPTO filing numbers for the first six months of 2011 compared with the same period of 2010.

  • 1st half of 2011:  151,392 new applications
  • 1st half of 2010:  145,629 new applications
  • 2nd half of 2010:  136,507 new applications

As you can see from the numbers above screenshots below, the number of applications through June 30th filed was a 4% increase over the same time last year. And an 11% increase over the 2nd half of 2010!

Will this increase continue? Let’s hope so — trademark filings are a good indicator of business investments. This increase would appear to be good news for the economy. Maybe someday the Wall Street Journal will begin reporting trademark application statistics along with the jobs and manufacturing numbers!

The data is taken from the USPTO TESS database. I presume it is accurate, but of course it is only as accurate as the database is. The USPTO data on the Trademarks Dashboard is more comprehensive, but it is a few months outdated and it is based on the fiscal calendar rather than the actual calendar.

USPTO trademark filings: 1st half of 2011

USPTO trademark filings: 1st half of 2010

USPTO trademark filings: 2nd half of 2010
